Becky Lynch says one of the happiest moments of her life quickly turned into one of the most terrifying.

After learning she was pregnant with her daughter Roux while serving as WWE Women’s Champion, Lynch became convinced she had let down an entire generation of female wrestlers. Before she could even celebrate the news, her mind jumped to one frightening thought—what if her pregnancy convinced WWE to stop trusting women in the main event?

While speaking on the Happy Mum podcast, Becky Lynch admitted she was terrified to tell then-WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, believing she might undo years of progress for the Women’s Division.

“But I think the scariest of all was telling my boss, Vince McMahon… And I like called him, and I was, oh my God, I was terrified. I was terrified. He was gonna, you know, I was his champion, and he’d taken this chance on women main eventing and etc.”

At the time, women had finally broken through barriers that once seemed impossible, including headlining WrestleMania. Lynch said she couldn’t shake the feeling that stepping away as champion would make WWE lose faith in women as top stars.

“And I was like, oh no, what if I’ve ruined it for a generation of women? Then I was like, ‘but that’s also not fair.’ You know, we should be able to do both.”

Looking back, Lynch realizes how much pressure she had placed on herself. She wanted to become a mother without feeling like she had to sacrifice the career she had spent years building, but she also worried that choosing both would come at the expense of every woman who came after her.

“That’s how my head was going into that conversation. Of like, ‘oh, oh, this is great for me, but now I’ve ruined women for life,’ you know? They’ll never be trusted again, you know? That’s a lot of weight on a person’s shoulders.”

Lynch ultimately welcomed Roux in December 2020 before returning to WWE the following year, and the Women’s Division continued to headline premium live events and remain one of the company’s biggest attractions—something that proved her fears never became reality.
