The bizarre WWE storyline involving Sami Zayn, Trick Williams, and the Gingerbread Man mascot apparently hasn’t gone over well with everyone backstage in WWE.
While fans have spent weeks debating whether Sami Zayn has officially turned heel following his increasingly erratic behavior, a new report suggests the Gingerbread Man angle itself has been receiving criticism internally within WWE creative circles.
According to WrestleVotes on Fightful Select, there has been “significant internal pushback” regarding the gimmick in recent weeks. The report stated that one source close to WWE creative described the storyline as “hokey and archaic.”
The Gingerbread Man character — nicknamed “Gingy” by fans — was originally introduced ahead of WrestleMania as part of the feud between Sami Zayn and Trick Williams.
At first, the mascot served as a fun side character connected to Trick Williams. But things took a strange turn on the May 1 episode of SmackDown when Sami completely destroyed the mascot during a chaotic in-ring segment.
The attack included Sami kicking the Gingerbread Man below the belt, unloading punches, hitting an elbow drop, and eventually ripping one of the mascot’s arms off before Trick Williams chased him away.
The segment immediately led to speculation that Sami had finally embraced a full heel turn, although Zayn himself later pushed back against that idea during an interview with the Toronto Sun. Instead, Sami claimed he was intentionally trying to create a more polarizing reaction from fans rather than becoming a traditional heel in WWE.
“I’ll disagree with your statement—I never fully turned heel. I had this idea for a slight character shift that would be a little outside the box and split the audience a little bit.”
Despite the internal criticism, WWE is continuing the angle for at least another week. The company is now advertising a “funeral” for the Gingerbread Man on the May 8 edition of SmackDown, meaning the storyline is somehow about to get even stranger.
Whether fans love the absurdity or think the gimmick has gone completely off the rails, the segment has definitely become one of the most talked-about parts of SmackDown over the past few weeks.
