Anna Jay has finally undergone the shoulder surgery she was hoping to avoid, and now she’s revealed just how much damage doctors actually had to repair. The AEW star says part of the bone in her shoulder had deteriorated after years of dislocations, leaving her missing roughly 20% of the bone that was supposed to keep the joint in place.
Speaking during her October 26 Twitch stream, Jay confirmed that the surgery took place nearly three weeks ago. She even joked about whether fans wanted to see the full incision before explaining exactly what doctors did.
“I don’t know if everyone wants to see my full incision. I was only under anesthesia for the surgery, which was almost three weeks ago. In two days, it will be two weeks. So almost three weeks ago, I had shoulder surgery, obviously. Basically, they did what’s called a Latarjet surgery. Basically, that surgery is to fix the missing shoulder bone.”
Jay then explained why her shoulder had become such a recurring problem. Between repeatedly dislocating it and undergoing previous surgeries, she says the bone had gradually deteriorated to the point where a significant portion was missing.
“What was happening to my shoulder over all these years — you know, dislocating it, having other surgeries — my bone was just deteriorating, and more of it was missing. Every time I dislocated it, more bone would chip off. So they described it to be like a golf ball on a tee, and the shoulder sits on a tee, and when it falls off, it’s dislocating.”
The numbers made things even clearer. According to Jay, doctors told her she was missing 20% of the bone, which finally explained why her shoulder had become so easy to dislocate.
“And basically, the tee of my shoulder was missing 20% of the bone. So no wonder it would just keep coming out, because 20% of a tee is a big deal.”
Fixing that meant doing more than simply repairing the existing damage. Jay explained that doctors took bone from another area of her shoulder and attached it to the damaged section, leaving her with two screws holding everything in place.
“So they basically take part of another bone in your shoulder, and they get that off, take that, and attach it to the tee of the shoulder and give me more bone. So it’s like a bone on the shoulder that you’re not using, and they screw it in. So now I have two screws in my shoulder.”
Thankfully, the actual procedure went well. Jay dealt with a decent amount of pain during the first couple of weeks, but she’s now moving into the next stage of recovery with physical therapy set to begin.
“The surgery went well, and I start physical therapy tomorrow, so that will be exciting. For the first week or two, I was in a good amount of pain. I just wanna get this thing off, but the sling, I think, I’ll have to keep on for six weeks total.”
Jay originally revealed on October 12 that surgery had become unavoidable after she sought opinions from multiple doctors and surgeons. She had spent months hoping there might be another way to handle the injury, especially since it was the same shoulder that had already caused her problems in the past.
There still isn’t a timetable for Jay’s return to the ring, and she’s only just beginning physical therapy after the procedure. For now, the good news is that the surgery went well and doctors were finally able to address the underlying bone loss that had kept causing her shoulder to pop out.
