Kenny Omega barely had time to celebrate winning back the AEW World Championship before AEW was reportedly lining up his first challenger.
Omega dethroned MJF in the main event of AEW Beach Break last week to become a two-time AEW World Champion, seemingly setting up a fresh list of challengers heading into AEW Redemption. As it turns out, one name had already climbed to the top of that list.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez revealed that, as of just a few days ago, the plan was for Omega’s first title defense to come against TNT Champion Kevin Knight.
“I can tell you this. That was the plan as of several days ago, that the Redemption main event was going to be Kevin Knight vs. Kenny Omega. Things could change, but that was the plan as of a few days ago for the title.”
If that sounds like a massive leap for Knight, that’s because it is. Knight only joined the Don Callis Family a few weeks ago, but he hasn’t exactly been standing in the background. He’s remained TNT Champion, become a regular fixture in one of AEW’s biggest storylines, and has quietly been positioned around the company’s top stars ever since aligning himself with Callis.
That’s why Alvarez’s update doesn’t come completely out of nowhere. Earlier this month, we had reported that people inside AEW had already been discussing Knight for a future AEW World Championship match. Redemption was mentioned internally as one possible landing spot, and the report added that Knight had also been lined up for programs with several wrestlers already established in the World Title scene.
Just weeks after joining the Don Callis Family, Kevin Knight may already be knocking on the door of AEW’s biggest prize. Even if the match doesn’t happen at Redemption, it’s becoming increasingly clear that AEW sees him as someone destined for the World Title picture sooner rather than later.
Do you think Kevin Knight is ready to challenge Kenny Omega for the AEW World Championship, or should AEW let him build a little longer before pulling the trigger? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
