Will Ospreay is heading to AEW All Out with Jon Moxley waiting for his first World Championship defense, but that apparently wasn’t the match AEW originally had in mind. The initial plan would have sent Ospreay right back into the ring with the man he beat for the title at Wembley Stadium.
During a PWInsider Q&A session, Mike Johnson was asked about AEW’s World Championship booking and why Tony Khan doesn’t stick with MJF as champion given the questioner’s belief that ratings tend to perform better with him on top. Johnson’s answer revealed that AEW had previously been looking in a very different direction for All Out. According to Johnson, the plan at one point was Will Ospreay vs. Kenny Omega.
“He had a plan to go with Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay for All Out.”
That would have meant running Ospreay and Omega back less than a month after their massive All In main event. Ospreay defeated Omega at Wembley Stadium on August 30 to capture the AEW World Championship, giving him one of the biggest win of his career in front of his home-country crowd.
Something clearly changed between Wembley and Chicago. Instead of getting another shot at Ospreay, Omega is no longer the challenger at All Out. AEW officially went with Jon Moxley during the September 2 episode of Dynamite, where the two came face-to-face after a chaotic main event.
Bottom line: Ospreay escaped Omega at All In and walked straight into Moxley for Chicago. The Omega rematch may have been the original destination, but AEW decided not to make fans wait long to find out that the road had changed.
