Toni Storm’s mysterious cassette tapes have fans wondering if she’s about to return to AEW, but it looks like they’re going to have to wait a little longer. While the company has started dropping clues about her disappearance, new details suggest her actual return to the ring isn’t happening anytime soon.
According to Fightful Select, AEW has begun setting the stage for Storm’s eventual comeback, but sources within the company say her in-ring return is not imminent. That doesn’t mean fans won’t see more of her storyline in the meantime, as other elements involving Storm could be introduced before she’s ready to wrestle again.
It was also revealed that AEW originally had major plans for Storm throughout 2026. However, following her match against Marina Shafir at AEW Revolution in March, the company learned she would be unavailable until the end of the year at the earliest. She was subsequently removed from television, leaving fans with the mystery surrounding her backstage attack.
There was apparently a much bigger plan behind that attack as well. AEW intended to plant several clues pointing toward different potential suspects responsible for taking Storm out. Fightful was told that the company had a particular person in mind to eventually reveal as the attacker, although the identity was deliberately left open in case creative plans needed to change.
That brings everything back to the mysterious cassette tapes that surfaced at AEW WrestleDream on October 17, 2026. It wasl confirmed that the tapes were intentionally planted for select media members attending the event as part of the effort to tease Storm’s eventual return.
Content creator Astrid Pizarro was among those who received a package containing a cassette labeled “Toni Storm Tapes.” The recording was marked as the first of five, leaving four additional tapes unaccounted for.
“I was handed out the tape at WrestleDream by somebody. I opened it, it just said ‘play me.’ Thankfully my dad and my brother have a cassette player, so I was able to play it today. I was the only one in my area that got it, and it says one out of five. I don’t know who the other four people are.”
The first tape, titled “Mundanities,” featured Renee Paquette narrating recordings supposedly taken from a device Storm secretly carried in her purse. The recordings offered an unusual look at Storm’s daily life, while the overall mystery connected back to her unexplained disappearance from AEW television.
One particularly interesting detail was that the fifth and final cassette was labeled “Death.” With AEW already planning to drop clues about multiple potential suspects, that title could become an important part of the storyline as more recordings surface.
Despite the renewed attention surrounding Storm, sources indicated that she hasn’t been spotted at many AEW events, if any, during her absence. That makes the recent developments particularly interesting, since AEW appears to be moving forward with the mystery without necessarily having Storm physically present at its shows. Tony Khan also addressed her status during the WrestleDream media scrum, confirming that Storm would eventually return to AEW without offering a specific date.
“I can’t say when or where but I know ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm will be back in AEW.”
For now, AEW appears to be keeping Storm’s storyline alive while holding off on her actual wrestling comeback. The cassette tapes give the company a way to continue the mystery surrounding her attacker, but fans shouldn’t mistake those teases for confirmation that she’s about to walk back onto Dynamite.
The bigger question now is whether AEW will stick with its original plans for whoever attacked Storm or use the extended absence to take the storyline in a different direction. Either way, the mystery is finally getting some attention again, even if Storm herself isn’t returning to the ring just yet.
