Kenny Omega is getting MJF for the AEW World Championship next week at Beach Break, but apparently, that was not the original landing spot.

The July 1 episode of AEW Dynamite saw MJF survive Mark Briscoe and keep the AEW World Title. After the match, Omega showed up and made it very clear he wanted next. That set the table for a huge title match, with MJF throwing in a brutal catch: if Omega loses, he can never challenge for the AEW World Championship again.

Now, the match is locked in for next Wednesday’s Beach Break edition of Dynamite. The interesting part is that Bryan Alvarez says AEW only made that call very recently, as he revealed on Wrestling Observer Radio.

“All I know is they decided to move the MJF Kenny Omega match up. I don’t know why.”

Alvarez said the match originally looked like it was headed for AEW Redemption in Montreal, which would have made sense with Omega being Canadian and the show carrying that name.

“This was apparently something that was decided very recently, clearly because it’s a Canadian show called Redemption, and that was gonna be the match. And then somebody decided, we’re gonna do it next week.”

That makes the Beach Break match feel even bigger, because AEW is not waiting around. MJF vs Omega could have easily been saved for pay-per-view, but instead, fans are getting it on Dynamite with Omega’s future World Title hopes on the line.

AEW Redemption takes place July 26 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and will mark the company’s first pay-per-view in the city. Still, with Omega vs MJF now happening early, the big question is what AEW has planned for that show instead.
