Aalyah Gutierrez has already been getting some pretty strong reviews inside WWE, but Rey Mysterio just revealed something even more interesting about how quickly she’s picking this up. Apparently, it only took two weeks at the Performance Center before WWE decided she was ready to have her first match.
While speaking with Stephanie McMahon on What’s Your Story?, Rey revealed that Aalyah initially went through a two-week training period at WWE’s Performance Center. By her final day, the coaches apparently liked what they were seeing enough to ask whether she wanted to work a PC live match.
Aalyah herself apparently wasn’t completely convinced she was ready. The trainers thought otherwise, and Rey recalled how that conversation led directly to her getting inside the ring for the first time.
“I got her to go to the PC for two weeks without me being there. Waking up every day, training, going back home, sleeping, waking up next day. She did that for two weeks.
On the last day, they asked her, like, ‘Hey, I think you’re ready to have a PC live match.’ She’s like, ‘I don’t know. Am I?’ They were like, ‘Yeah, you are.’”
WWE didn’t just throw her out there without some help either. Rey revealed that veteran coach Norman Smiley worked with Aalyah to put the match together before she officially had her first bout.
“So they helped her put the match together. Norman Smiley was her coach, and she had her first match.”
Then Rey actually watched what his daughter had done, and apparently even he wasn’t expecting what he saw. He admitted he might be a little biased considering she’s his daughter, but he came away believing there was something different about her.
“And when I saw it, I was like, ‘No, there is no way.’ I’m probably biased….. but I just, there’s something special there.”
That lines up pretty damn well with what people around WWE have already been saying about Aalyah. After she joined WWE’s latest Performance Center recruit class and began training, The Undertaker revealed on his Six Feet Under podcast that he had already heard positive reports about her progress.
“Well, I hear she’s down there killing it, man.”
Michelle McCool had apparently heard similar things about how Aalyah was looking between the ropes. Her feedback was pretty simple: “Yeah, I heard she’s smooth.”
Even Dominik Mysterio admitted the reports reaching him about his sister had been good. He hasn’t had much opportunity to personally train with her because of his WWE schedule, but he’s clearly been hearing what’s happening back at the Performance Center.
“I’ve heard—I’ve heard good things. Yeah. Maybe cut all this part out.”
Bottom line: Rey has now actually seen her wrestle himself, and even with the proud-dad bias fully acknowledged, something about that first match apparently convinced him there might be another special Mysterio coming through WWE’s system.
What do you think about Aalyah Gutierrez getting her first match, and could she eventually become the next Mysterio to make her mark in the company? Let us know what you think in the comments.
