Buddy Murphy has been looking for a new permanent home since leaving WWE. Now known as Buddy Matthews, he has been linked to Impact, AEW, and even appeared in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Matthews wrestled Kazuchika Okada at an NJPW event in San Jose, California in 2021. The former cruiserweight champion had very successful run on the independent scene as well.

Rumors have been all over the place regarding the former WWE star. Late last year, it was reported that AEW was passing on Matthews. That appears to have changed.

Fightful Select reported that AEW is extremely interested in bringing in Buddy Matthews. There are conflicting reports over how far along the talks have progressed. Some say creative is already set in stone, while others say ideas have only been pitched at this point.

“Matthews has been a free agent since about September, and told Fightful he wasn’t quite sure of where he’d land. He’s worked a plethora of indies, as well as dates for MLW and NJPW Pro Wrestling, but we haven’t heard details on him signing anywhere.

Sources within AEW in recent weeks have indicated that there was growing interest and rumblings about Matthews joining the company in some capacity, with some even heard that there were creative pitches made, with another source going as far as to say that creative is already decided. We’ve not confirmed the latter.”

Several AEW wrestlers have been told that plans are in place to bring in Buddy Matthews. There is no timetable and nothing has been confirmed yet. AEW fans could be in for another big surprise very soon.
