Seth Rollins has the opportunity of a lifetime at tonight’s WWE Royal Rumble premium live event. The Architect will take on fellow former Shield member Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. That was not the original plan, though.

WWE had to take a detour when Roman Reigns tested positive for COVID-19 before the Day 1 event in Atlanta. Brock Lesnar was placed into a planned four-way and ended up winning Big E’s WWE Championship. The original plan for the match and the subsequent build to WrestleMania was way different.

Seth Rollins was supposed to win the four-way match between himself, Big E, Kevin Owens, and Bobby Lashley. At the last minute, Lesnar was placed into the match. Brock ended up winning the title and changing the original plan. Dave Meltzer revealed the original WrestleMania idea on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio.

“The four-way was originally Seth going over, yeah. I was under the impression it was Seth against either Big E or Bobby Lashley [for WrestleMania].”

As of now, neither Big E nor Bobby Lashley has a firm opponent for WrestleMania. The results of tonight’s WWE Royal Rumble will have a lot to do with how things shake out. Big E will compete in the men’s Royal Rumble match to try and earn his way back into the Mania main event. Lashley has a highly anticipated WWE Championship match against Brock Lesnar.

The WWE Universe will have to wait and see how things go tonight. WrestleMania is still a couple months away. The road there begins tonight in Saint Louis at the Royal Rumble.
