WWE shocked a lot of fans when they announced that Mickie James would be competing in this year’s women’s Royal Rumble. James is the reigning Impact Knockouts Champion. WWE shockingly acknowledged that fact both on television and via social media.

Rumors began to fly regarding what type of working relationship WWE and Impact might be brewing up. At the same time, Ringside News exclusively reported that AEW was talking to the Stamford office about some upcoming collaborations. Mickie James’ Royal Rumble announcement set off a firestorm of speculation.

There could be more surprises coming soon. WrestleVotes reported that multiple WWE sources said the company is trying to secure an unexpected “forbidden door” entrant for the men’s Rumble. Nothing has been confirmed at this time.

“Had more than 1 source this weekend, w/o me directly asking, state they believe WWE will try for an “unexpected” forbidden door entrant for the Men’s Royal Rumble. Personally I’m skeptical it happens, but I can confirm WWE is at least open to the idea. Which is exciting enough.”

Ringside News exclusively reported that WWE is now open to bringing in people from other companies. Mickie James might not be the only person who walks through that Forbidden Door.

The tides of professional wrestling began to shift with the debut of All Elite Wrestling in 2019. Tony Khan’s group has always been open to working with other organizations. AEW has exchanged talent with Impact and New Japan Pro Wrestling in the past. WWE now wants a piece of the action.

A surprise entrant from another wrestling company in the men’s Royal Rumble would be unprecedented in the current age. WWE has worked with other promotions in the past but largely shies away from the practice now. Fans will have to tune in to the Royal Rumble to see if there are any surprises waiting to step through the forbidden door.
