Zoey Serrano has spent years seeing fans make the same assumption about her. Even after posting photos with her husband, the former WWE star says people still insist she’s a lesbian—and she finally decided to set the record straight.
Speaking to Ring the Belle, Serrano was asked about teaming with Sonya Deville and Shayna Baszler in WWE. The conversation quickly turned to the fan perception that grew around Pure Fusion Collective, with Serrano admitting it’s something that has followed her for years.
“Hold on. This will never die.”
Serrano said she loves the LGBTQ+ community and appreciates the fans who’ve embraced her over the years. At the same time, she wanted to clear up the misconception once and for all because, according to her, people still question her sexuality despite regularly seeing her with her husband.
“Look, I love my gays. All right. I love you all. I am straight, though. I am going to put that out there because even to this day when I post something with me and my husband… I still get comments. I’m an ally. But I am straight, you know. Sorry, ladies.”
The topic came up again later when Serrano looked back on her time alongside Deville and Shayna Baszler. She laughed about the group’s reputation and admitted they leaned into the jokes backstage, even though everyone knew it was all in good fun.
“No, Sonya and Shayna are really the queer… You can’t take that title. I am an ally. I mean, if we want to call myself a queer icon, I am more than happy. But, you know, Sonya really, like, broke through with it, right? I was there for a good time, baby.”
Serrano then shared one of the running jokes the trio had while they were together in WWE. According to her, they used to laugh that she was somehow “more gay than Sonya and straighter than Shayna.”
“I mean, we did have a running joke that I am the gay one. I’m more gay than Sonya and straighter than Shayna.”
For Serrano, the rumors have never really bothered her. She made it clear she’s grateful for the support she’s received from LGBTQ+ fans, but she also wanted to put the long-running assumption about her own sexuality to rest.
Do you think Zoey Serrano handled the rumors the right way? Sound off in the comments.
