Roman Reigns looks to be headed for AAA—but not where most fans thought. After the August 3 edition of RAW sparked speculation with a backstage interaction between Reigns and Rey Mysterio, Dave Meltzer says the Tribal Chief is expected to appear for the promotion. The twist? It won’t be at AAA TripleManía in Las Vegas.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer revealed WWE already has plans for Reigns, but the MGM Grand event isn’t believed to be one of them. Instead, another AAA event may have jumped to the front of the line.
“Obviously they’re going to put him on a show. Now, what I can tell you is it’s not going to be the MGM Grand show… which would’ve been one of my first picks. It could be Chicago. They’re running the Allstate Arena. I figured Punk would work that show. I didn’t figure Roman would work that show, but they might. Maybe they want Roman to work the show. It is head-to-head with AEW’s pay-per-view in the same city.”
If that’s the play, WWE wouldn’t just be sending one of its biggest stars to AAA—it would be dropping Roman Reigns onto a show running against AEW in the exact same market. And Meltzer doesn’t think that’ll be the only move.
“Obviously they’re going to do some sort of a special on it, whether it be YouTube or elsewhere, Netflix, something somewhere. Probably YouTube. The big thing is that they’re going to go head-to-head with the AEW pay-per-view in the same city and they want to draw a bigger crowd and they probably will.”
The timing makes Reigns’ backstage segment on RAW look a lot more interesting. After praising Jacob Fatu, the OTC was stopped by Rey Mysterio, who told him he wanted to “run something by” him before the two shook hands and walked off.
WWE never revealed what the conversation was about. Now, if this report is on the money, fans may already have their answer.
