The Creed Brothers are officially done with WWE, but a new revelation about Julius Creed makes their departure even more surprising. It turns out WWE once had enormous expectations for Julius, with some inside the company believing he had the potential to become the next John Cena.

Julius and Brutus Creed recently parted ways with WWE after their contracts expired. Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp confirmed the departure, indicating that the split was mutual rather than a sudden release. Now, Dave Meltzer has provided additional insight into what happened and how far the brothers had fallen from WWE’s original expectations.

During Wrestling Observer Radio, Garrett Gonzales asked Meltzer why WWE had moved on from Julius and Brutus. Meltzer acknowledged that he hadn’t fully investigated the situation but said everything he understood pointed toward their contracts simply running out.

“What I gather is the contracts expired and they weren’t renewed.”

However, the bigger revelation came when Meltzer discussed how WWE originally viewed Julius Creed. According to Meltzer, people inside the company believed Julius could become one of its biggest stars when he first started.

“Julius Creed, when he first started, I had people telling me he’s going to be one of the four big stars of the company within the company.”

That wasn’t even the highest praise Julius received. Meltzer revealed that during the recruitment process, some people within WWE were comparing his potential to John Cena, one of the most successful Superstars in company history.

“I was outright told as they were recruiting, if we get this guy, some of the top guys there, he could be our next cena, you know”

Those expectations obviously never materialized. Julius and Brutus impressed early in their WWE careers with their incredible strength and athleticism, eventually capturing the NXT Tag Team Championships. However, their momentum stalled after moving to the main roster in 2023. The brothers eventually joined Chad Gable’s American Made faction before returning to NXT in 2026. Despite getting another opportunity on television, WWE never established either man as the major star the company once envisioned.

Meltzer suggested that charisma may have played a role in their struggles. While both brothers had tremendous athletic ability, he questioned whether they developed the personalities necessary to become top attractions. He also pointed out that limited television opportunities can hurt younger wrestlers’ confidence and development. That doesn’t mean their wrestling careers are finished. In fact, Meltzer believes AEW should seriously consider bringing both brothers into the company.

“I mean, if I’m aw. I, I definitely give them a shot.”

Meltzer explained that AEW’s wrestling-focused environment might allow Julius and Brutus to demonstrate the athletic ability that originally made them such promising prospects.

“But I think that in the AEW environment, their athleticism will, will be, it’ll, it’ll come out more and it’ll be, I mean, I, I see them as people who could help aew.”

The Creed Brothers’ WWE departure marks a dramatic turnaround for two wrestlers who once appeared destined for major success. Julius went from being compared to John Cena during his recruitment to leaving WWE without ever reaching that level. Whether the brothers can rebuild their careers elsewhere remains to be seen, but their next destination could give them the opportunity to prove WWE gave up on them too soon.

Do you think WWE wasted the Creed Brothers’ potential, or did Julius and Brutus simply fail to live up to expectations? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
