The NXT Championship will be on the line next week, and things got personal fast during WWE NXT for September 22, 2026. Grayson Waller and Mason Rook came face-to-face ahead of their championship match on the September 29 episode, and Waller spent most of the encounter trying to get inside his challenger’s head.
Waller opened by asking Rook if he was “feeling the pressure yet” before explaining what brought him back to NXT. The champion said one of his goals was to capture the NXT Championship and restore the title to its former prestige, while defending it against the best competition available.
Waller actually gave Rook plenty of credit at first. He acknowledged him as a legitimate challenger and admitted they have some things in common, including leaving everything behind and traveling across the world to chase their wrestling dreams.
Then Waller started twisting the knife. The NXT Champion took shots at Rook’s appearance and asked whether he missed his mother before claiming he could “roast Mason Rook like a pig at a luau.” Despite all the trash talk, Waller admitted there’s nobody else on the planet who moves quite like his challenger.
Waller even brought John Cena into the conversation, pointing out that Rook is Cena’s favorite wrestler. He then directly warned Cena not to put his faith in the wrong guy heading into next week’s championship showdown.
Things got even more serious when Waller explained why looking at Rook actually made him “sad.” Waller said he returned to NXT because of wrestlers like Rook before accusing his challenger of becoming complacent.
Waller finished things with a warning about exactly what he plans to do when they finally meet with the championship at stake. The champion vowed to “drown” Rook on September 29 and predicted that Rook will eventually quit.
Now the talking is almost over. Grayson Waller will defend the NXT Championship against Mason Rook on the September 29 episode of WWE NXT, and after what Waller said during their face-to-face confrontation, this one has become a lot more personal than a simple title defense.
