Netflix got dragged for blurring Bron Breakker’s entire head during the Night of Champions replay, but now it looks like WWE was the one holding the edit button.
Breakker was busted open during his steel cage war with Seth Rollins after Rollins superplexed him from the top of the cage through a table. Fans watching the replay later noticed Breakker’s bloody face was not just hidden. His whole head was blurred, which instantly turned a brutal cage match into meme material.
Now, according to PWInsider, those edits were made by WWE itself. Breakker’s face was blurred at different points, but that was not the only change. Some camera angles from the live broadcast were swapped out for alternate shots to avoid showing him bleeding, and at least one moment was cut to the crowd for a few seconds after the blood started flowing.
“The edits to Bron Breakker and Seth Rollins on the Netflix replay of Night of Champions were done by WWE themselves as not only is Breakker’s bloody face blurred at times but some camera angles used during the live broadcast have since been replaced with alternate ones to hide him. There is also at least one instance of WWE making an edit to cut to a crowd shot for a few seconds rather than showing the action after Breakker begins bleeding.”
WWE also cleaned up the audio. After Rollins put Breakker through the table, the live crowd’s “holy sh**” chant was reportedly replaced on the Netflix replay with a “This is awesome!” chant, which has become a common WWE replay move on the platform.
“In what has become a common practice for WWE replays on Netflix, the “holy sh**” chant after Rollins puts Breakker though a table with a superplex has been replaced with a “This is awesome!” chant.”
So yeah, Netflix took the heat, but WWE apparently did the scrubbing. The match was still a violent cage fight with chairs, tables, the cage door, and Rollins winning with a top-rope Stomp, but the replay version got the sanitized treatment in a very obvious way.
