Big Cass came back to WWE looking like he was being rebuilt as a monster, but that comeback may have already hit a serious wall. During the WWE RAW episode on September 28, 2026, Cass lost to Dragon Lee, and Dave Meltzer believes the booking could be a pretty loud sign that WWE has already cooled on him as a singles act.
That would be a major shift considering how Cass was presented when he returned. WWE brought him back alone, gave him a much more serious presentation and appeared to be moving away from the Enzo Amore pairing that defined his original run, even though WWE had shown interest in bringing Enzo back before Cass ultimately returned on his own.
Things looked a lot different Monday night. Cass faced Dragon Lee and got plenty of offense against the much smaller opponent, but Lee escaped a chokeslam attempt and caught him with a sunset flip to score the pin.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio after the show, Meltzer said the loss immediately stood out because he doesn’t believe WWE would have booked Cass that way if the company still viewed him as someone it planned to seriously push.
“They would never let Cass, if they had plans for him, lose to Dragon Lee. That is not in their MO at all.”
Meltzer wasn’t knocking the match itself. In fact, he called it easily Cass’ best match since returning to WWE and praised what Cass and Dragon Lee were able to put together. His bigger concern was what the finish may say about where Cass now sits in WWE’s plans. That led Meltzer to drop an even stronger line. After watching Cass take the loss, he suggested WWE may have already given up on trying to establish him as a singles star and even floated the idea that Cass might need Enzo back beside him.
“I think Cass may need Enzo because they’ve given up on him as a single, which is a lot quicker than I thought they would.”
That is Meltzer’s interpretation of the booking, not confirmation that WWE officials have formally pulled the plug on Cass. Still, it stands out because Cass returned with what looked like a completely different direction, and WWE’s comeback presentation openly leaned into his redemption story after the problems that followed his original run.
The entire idea appeared to be about giving Cass another chance to prove he could stand on his own. That makes Meltzer bringing Enzo back into the conversation especially interesting, considering Enzo has previously spoken about how close he and Cass became after arriving in WWE together.
Cass returned without his longtime partner and appeared to be getting a legitimate shot at rebuilding himself as a singles threat. Losing to Dragon Lee this quickly into that run now has Meltzer questioning whether WWE has already seen enough and decided the experiment isn’t working.
One loss doesn’t automatically kill a WWE push, but Cass’ situation suddenly looks a lot different than it did when he first walked back through the door. If Meltzer’s read on the booking is accurate, WWE may already be looking for another direction — and bringing Enzo back would certainly change the conversation fast.
