Sami Zayn may have just won the Undisputed WWE Championship, but one possible challenger has already been kicked around inside WWE.
During a recent Self Made Session, Self Made revealed that after posting on social media about wanting to see Chad Gable vs. Sami Zayn at a major event, someone inside WWE slid into his DMs with a very interesting response. It started with nothing more than an eye emoji.
“I got a DM from somebody in WWE after I made my Chad Gable post. So, a WWE person sent it back to me with an eye emoji.”
Naturally, Self Made wanted to know what that meant. The answer he got was short, but it confirmed the idea has at least been discussed behind the scenes.
“And I said, ‘I’m at work. What does this mean?’ They just replied, ‘We’ve talked about it.’”
Self Made then tried to find out if the discussion involved Gable challenging for the Undisputed WWE Championship. That’s where the source stopped short of confirming anything.
“So I replied, ‘For the belt!?’ The reply I got was, ‘I don’t know about that.’ So basically, the source is implying to me that they actually might do Chad and Sami.”
That’s the real story here. Nobody is saying Chad Gable is next in line for the title. Nobody is saying SummerSlam is the plan. But the matchup itself has apparently been kicked around internally, which is enough to get people talking.
The timing is interesting because Sami’s title reign already has fans wondering how much of this was actually planned. Dave Meltzer questioned on Wrestling Observer Radio whether WWE always intended to put the championship on Zayn or if the company pivoted after months of criticism over stale creative.
Bryan Alvarez pointed out that Sami wasn’t even in the world title picture until just before Night of Champions, making the victory feel more like a late decision than a long-term story.
It was also reported that WWE originally wanted to save Sami’s world title victory until WrestleMania 43 in Saudi Arabia next year, suggesting the company may have accelerated its plans.
Whether any of that changes Sami’s first title feud remains to be seen. For now, the only thing that seems clear is that Sami Zayn vs. Chad Gable is a match WWE creative has discussed, even if nobody knows whether it’ll be for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
