Rey Mysterio has spent months saying he’s not ready to put a date on retirement, but WWE might already be thinking about his final run. There’s been growing backstage talk that 2027 could finally be the year the legendary luchador calls it a career inside the ring.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, there have been recent “rumblings” within WWE about a major retirement coming next year. The name at the center of those conversations is Mysterio.
“According to those that WrestleVotes spoke to, there have been rumblings of a legendary retirement within WWE in 2027, with that talk centering around Rey Mysterio.”
Before anyone starts circling a WrestleMania date, nothing is officially locked in yet. The source didn’t know exactly when or where Rey would wrestle his final match, but said the chatter at WWE television lately has pointed toward 2027 being the end of the road.
“A source confirmed that they didn’t have any direct knowledge of when or where an official retirement would take place — instead indicating that recent chatter at TV has pointed towards next year marking the end of the road for Rey Mysterio as an active wrestler.”
WWE has apparently gone beyond simply wondering when Rey might be finished. The company has reportedly kicked around ideas for how to handle his farewell if he does decide that next year is the right time.
“According to the same source, WWE has discussed ideas on how to present his farewell.”
Retirement wouldn’t necessarily mean Rey is packing up and disappearing from WWE either. There’s reportedly a feeling that he could stick around and help the next generation once he’s done taking bumps himself.
“Much like his counterpart AJ Styles, there’s a feeling among many within WWE that Rey will remain involved once his in-ring days are behind him, as he’ll continue to play a vital role in the development of next-generation talent in WWE and AAA.”
That’s what makes this whole thing pretty interesting, because Rey himself wasn’t talking like someone with one foot out the door just last month. He previously thought 50 might be his cutoff, but after blowing past that deadline, he told BANG Showbiz in September that he was done trying to predict when retirement would happen.
“I think I’m just going to wing it and see where this road takes me, you know, because I’m really enjoying the moments right now that I’m living inside the ring, whether as a wrestler or as a GM.”
Rey also said he was feeling “really, really good” physically and enjoying a schedule that doesn’t beat him up four or five nights every week anymore. Between wrestling, his GM duties and his involvement with AAA, he sounded pretty happy with where things stood.
So this isn’t Rey Mysterio announcing his retirement, and there isn’t a confirmed farewell match sitting on WWE’s calendar. For now, it’s backstage chatter — but WWE apparently thinking about how to send him off makes 2027 a whole lot more interesting.
If Rey does decide next year is it, WWE will have plenty of time to make the goodbye count instead of having his career quietly wind down. After everything he’s meant to the company and lucha libre as a whole, there’s no shortage of directions WWE could go if it really is preparing for one last ride.
