Rey Mysterio once thought he would be retired by 50. Now approaching 52, that deadline has come and gone, and the WWE Hall of Famer isn’t interested in replacing it with another one.
While speaking with BANG Showbiz, Mysterio was asked about his retirement plans after Dominik Mysterio recently said he believes he should be the one to retire his father when the time comes. Rey had previously mentioned 50 as a possible stopping point, but he explained that his mindset has changed as he continues to enjoy what he is doing.
A big part of that comes down to his schedule. Mysterio isn’t dealing with the grind of wrestling four or five nights every week anymore, and splitting his time between wrestling, his GM role and AAA has given him a balance he enjoys.
“I think I’m loving the process right now of enjoying the moments, you know, as they come. Before it was maybe a little bit more stressful because you were working constantly, you know, four or five days a week, but now it’s been like, okay, with the GM role and Triple A and then wrestling on RAW, I kind of vibe that program. I don’t mind it at all. I enjoy it.”
Instead of picking another age and working toward the end, Rey is going to see where things take him. He’s still enjoying being inside the ring and says he continues to learn even while working on the other side as a GM.
“Because I’m still on both sides of the spectrum and I’m learning as I’m growing still, you know. So, it’s really fun. I think I’m just going to wing it and see where this road takes me, you know, because I’m really enjoying the moments right now that I’m living inside the ring, whether as a wrestler or as a GM.”
His body isn’t currently giving him a reason to reconsider either. When asked how he was feeling physically, Mysterio said he is injury-free and feeling “really, really good.”
“Really good. Really, really good. Yes, yes. No injuries, knock on wood. You know, the last one I had was my groin, which was two years ago prior to wrestling Chad Gable at WrestleMania, and finally that match came true, you know, about a month ago, which was really cool.”
Finally getting that match with Gable also allowed Rey to cross something off his list after carrying it with him for two years.
“I kind of had that on my back, carrying it for that long, you know, until it happened. Once it happened, I’m like, ‘Oh, that feels good.’ And I’m glad that we felt we had a great match.”
The WWE Hall of Famer isn’t slowing down just yet either. He is set to square off against Omos at TripleMania 34 tonight, giving the legendary luchador another very different challenge inside the ring.
Dominik may already have an idea for how his father’s career should eventually end, but Rey isn’t ready to put that ending on the calendar. He feels healthy, likes his current schedule and is having too much fun to pick another retirement date.
