WrestleMania week is rolling in Las Vegas, but the early vibe around the city isn’t feeling as packed as some expected.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio from Las Vegas, Dave Meltzer shared what he noticed after getting into town for WrestleMania weekend. After moving around the city and checking out the scene, he said the number of visible wrestling fans didn’t match what he remembered from last year. After spending time around the city, Meltzer explained that the difference compared to last year stood out quickly.
“I haven't seen, I will say this. I've been going around and everything. I haven't seen nearly the amount of wrestling fans as I saw like last year here. Not even close.”
The conversation then turned to ticket movement and travel trends tied to WrestleMania weekend. Meltzer said ticket sales are slightly behind last year, but he believes the number of fans actually traveling into Las Vegas might be down even more. He explained that even if the ticket gap isn’t huge, the overall turnout in the city could still feel lighter.
“It's a little bit above that, but not much. But no, it's. I mean, as of yesterday, which was the last time I checked, they were 17 down in tickets. But I think that the number of people who came to town is down more than 17%. That's just my gut.”
Meltzer also pointed to outside factors that may be affecting travel plans this year. He noted that tourism in Las Vegas has been slower overall, and another major convention happening at the same time could be driving hotel prices higher and making trips harder for some fans. He explained how that timing may have made things more expensive across the board.
“Also, tourism itself is way down here, which is one of the reasons they wanted it here. But they picked a bad weekend because the national association of Broadcasters have their convention here. And so, you know, that's why the hotel room skyrocketed and everything.”
WrestleMania week usually turns the host city into a non-stop wrestling party, packed with fans heading to shows, signings, and late-night events. More fans are still expected to arrive as the weekend continues, but early talk from inside Las Vegas already has people comparing this year to past WrestleMania weeks.
With two nights of WrestleMania still to come, the real test will be how full the stadium looks and how busy the city feels once the biggest shows get underway.
Do you feel like WrestleMania week in Las Vegas looks smaller this year, or do you think things will pick up once the weekend hits full speed? Let us know what you’re seeing and drop your thoughts in the comments.
