Nick Aldis’ return match at SummerSlam wasn’t a one-off. In fact, people inside WWE may want a lot more from him than just another special attraction.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, the internal expectation is that Aldis will wrestle again following his impressive performance against GUNTHER at SummerSlam. While that return may not happen until 2027, the bigger story is what some people backstage reportedly think should happen after that.
“It is believed internally that Nick Aldis will compete again inside a WWE ring following his performance at SummerSlam this past Saturday. However, according to a source, that return may not come until 2027.”
Rather than bringing Aldis back for another one-off appearance, the report claims there is support backstage for giving the SmackDown General Manager a meaningful run as an active wrestler.
“The source added that a number of people backstage believe Aldis is as talented, if not more talented, than several of WWE’s regular television performers and would like to see him have a significant in-ring run with the company.”
Joey Votes added that Aldis exceeded expectations at SummerSlam and left a strong impression internally.
“He definitely surpassed expectations. I think the crowd is behind it. They want to see more of him. We’ve learned, talking to sources, we probably will see more of him. It may just take a while.”
TC agreed, praising both Aldis’ SummerSlam performance and the body of work he built before arriving in WWE. He also encouraged fans unfamiliar with Aldis’ career outside WWE to revisit his previous matches.
“I thought he absolutely knocked it out of the park. He came out looking like a million bucks in that jacket and the towel around his neck. I want to see him wrestle again. I think he’s one of the best GM characters they’ve had in a long time. I’m a big fan of his work. If you haven’t watched him wrestle outside of WWE, do yourself a favor and go back and watch some of the stuff he’s done in various companies. You’ll know that he’s definitely one of the best wrestlers of his generation.”
TC also believes Aldis still has plenty left to offer despite spending most of his WWE run behind the General Manager’s desk.
“He’s only, what, 39 or 40 years old? He’s got some tread on the tires. If they want to bring him back into another storyline like we saw with GUNTHER, I think he has every right to want to take advantage of that one more time.”
When Joey asked whether he agreed with the backstage belief that Aldis is more talented than some of WWE’s regular television performers, TC didn’t hesitate.
“Sure. I mean, he looks it. He knows how to wrestle. He’s got the acting side of things down pat. He’s got a great look. I don’t dispute that notion at all. Just because you don’t wrestle every single week doesn’t mean you’ve lost the talent.”
Aldis has already said he’s open to wrestling again if the right opportunity comes along. If this report is accurate, that opportunity may already be waiting. The only question now is whether WWE pulls the trigger in 2027.
