John Cena didn’t just randomly decide to pop up at WWE Backlash — the whole thing was reportedly locked in behind the scenes long before fans ever saw his social media post.
After Cena sent WWE fans into speculation mode by teasing “history-making news” for the May 9 event in Tampa, many assumed the appearance came together recently. But according to BodySlam.net, WWE and Cena had already agreed to the appearance weeks earlier before he publicly revealed it online.
The report also noted that the appearance was considered an easy setup for Cena because he currently lives in the Tampa area, making the trip simple for everyone involved.
The Leader of Cenation completely changed the conversation surrounding Backlash after posting a cryptic message teasing that something much bigger than a normal appearance was coming.
“It’s official! I’m headed to #WWEBacklash 🤖! After months of planning and effort, I am SO excited to break some history-making news! I can’t promise it’ll be perfect but I can promise it will change the WWE experience for Superstars and fans!”
That immediately fueled theories that WWE could be preparing a major announcement involving Cena rather than just bringing him in for a cameo. Before this report, Dave Meltzer addressed Cena’s Backlash role during Wrestling Observer Radio and explained that Cena’s WWE appearances are built directly into his current agreement with the company.
“Okay, so the John Cena thing… so the situation there is that he’s on Backlash. I’m not sure what the role will be because he said he’s never going to wrestle again. They signed him to a contract which called for a number of appearances. So this is one of those appearances. It was not like, you know… like his deal called for these things.”
Whether this turns into a major WWE business announcement, a fan experience rollout, or something tied directly to Cena’s long-term future with the company, WWE clearly wants Backlash to feel bigger than just another premium live event. And with Cena personally hyping it as “history-making,” expectations are already getting sky high heading into Tampa.
