Mick Foley may be planning to sit Darby Allin down for a serious talk about taking fewer risks in the ring, but Vince Russo does not seem convinced that conversation is going to change anything.
The topic came up during The Russo Brand podcast after Foley said he wants to speak with Darby about dialing things back before his body pays an even bigger price. Russo pushed back on that idea and pointed to Darby’s own past comments about death as the reason he thinks Foley, or anyone else, may not be able to get through to him.
“I got to tell you this, and I’ve said this about Darby Allin before just based on what he said in some of his interviews. I read something recently where he says, ‘I’m not afraid of death. I already have one foot in the grave.’ Bro, I think this guy, I don’t think there’s any way Mick Foley or anybody else is going to get this guy to scale back. I really believe he’s got a death wish. I mean, for a guy to say I’m not afraid of death, I already got one foot in the grave, I don’t…”
After Russo said that, Darby’s age came up. Russo guessed he was around 25, but Jeff corrected him and said Darby is 33. Al Snow then explained that younger wrestlers can say they are not afraid of death because they have not truly felt what long-term damage can do to a person yet.
Snow said the scarier part is not always dying. It is surviving years of dangerous bumps and being left with a body that cannot give you a good life anymore.
Darby Allin has built his AEW career on doing things most wrestlers would never even try, but Russo clearly believes this is more than just trying to entertain the fans. Whether Foley can get through to him or not, that “death wish” line is a pretty heavy warning.
