Vince Russo believes CM Punk could end up taking the heat if WrestleMania numbers don’t meet expectations, and he didn’t hesitate to spell out how he thinks that situation would unfold behind closed doors.
While discussing WrestleMania ticket sales and the pressure surrounding the event, Russo focused on how WWE decision-makers often look for someone to blame when business numbers fall short. He pointed to the possibility that attendance could become a major talking point internally, especially if the show doesn’t sell out across both nights.
Russo explained that if WrestleMania ends up falling short of expectations, he believes the spotlight could quickly shift toward Punk’s drawing power, particularly if Punk is positioned as a central figure going into the event.
“They're going to be 40,000 short of selling out both nights… they're going to look at Game. Bro, what is Game going to say? Punk didn't draw as a champion. Obviously, they're not interested in Punk as a champion because he didn't sell out WrestleMania.”
Russo continued by stressing that this type of reaction wouldn’t be new, noting that in his view, wrestling history has shown that performers often shoulder the blame when business metrics don’t line up with expectations. He suggested that internal conversations could quickly turn toward assigning responsibility to Punk, regardless of other factors affecting ticket sales or fan response.
“BRO, YOU KNOW, THAT'S the first thing everybody in that room is going to say.”
The remarks reflect a long-standing mentality within professional wrestling, where top stars are often judged based on their ability to draw crowds and generate revenue. With WrestleMania always serving as WWE’s biggest measuring stick, the pressure surrounding attendance numbers and fan reception can shape how talent is viewed moving forward.
Whether Punk ultimately faces that kind of scrutiny remains to be seen, but Russo’s comments add another layer to the ongoing discussion about expectations heading into WrestleMania and how success—or failure—could be interpreted behind the scenes.
Do you think CM Punk would actually be blamed if WrestleMania ticket sales fall short, or are there bigger factors that determine success today? Let us know your thoughts and drop your feedback in the comments.
