Vince Russo hasn’t watched AEW in years, but that doesn’t mean he’s about to criticize Tony Khan.
While speaking with DEMAND LUCHA, Russo revealed that he stopped watching AEW roughly five years ago because the product simply isn’t the style of wrestling he enjoys. Even so, he made it clear that his opinion of Tony Khan couldn’t be more different from his opinion of the show itself.
In fact, Russo says appearing on a recent show with Khan and Jonathan Coachman only made him appreciate the AEW President even more.
“Yeah, man. Bro, Tony Khan—me and Coach Jonathan Coachman had him on our show. If you don’t like Tony Khan, something’s wrong with you. He is such an entertaining character. I don’t watch AEW—stopped watching it five years ago, so I don’t critique the product. It’s his company, he can do whatever he wants with it. I stopped watching because it wasn’t the type of wrestling I like. But as far as a very likable, very funny character—I think Tony Khan’s great for the wrestling business.”
Russo stated that because he no longer watches AEW, he doesn’t believe it’s fair to critique the current product. Instead, he judges Khan on the impact he’s had on the industry—and in Russo’s view, that impact has been overwhelmingly positive. When the interviewer pointed out that AEW has created more jobs and driven up salaries across wrestling, Russo didn’t hesitate to agree.
“Absolutely. He’s done some wonders—raised the pay for a lot of people, overall improved things for the better.”
Russo has never hidden the fact that AEW’s presentation isn’t for him, but he also made it clear that separating the product from the person matters. He may not be tuning into AEW every week, but he believes Tony Khan has played a major role in making the wrestling business stronger for the people working in it.
