Vince Russo isn’t holding back when it comes to modern wrestling fans and celebrity worship, claiming it all stems from low self-esteem.
While speaking to Monte and the Pharaoh, Russo was asked why some fans idolize celebrities and treat them like they are bigger than ordinary people. Russo said he believes that kind of idol worship often comes from low self-esteem. In his view, people look at celebrities as larger-than-life figures because they have convinced themselves they could never reach that same level.
“Yeah, I mean, bro, that’s a great great great question. I guess the idol worship really comes with a low self-esteem when when you look at somebody and for whatever reason you’ve been convinced that you can never be like that person or have what that person has, you know, rather than 1,000% believing in yourself and trying to really work on the, you know, God-given skills, you know, that God has given you for a season.”
Russo then said this behavior is especially strange when it comes to professional wrestling. He argued that wrestlers and wrestling personalities are still regular people, even if fans treat them differently because of their jobs.
“It’s just really low self-esteem and and looking up to people that are larger than life, bro. That’s um that’s insane when it comes to professional wrestling. Absolutely insane.”
Russo stated there is no major difference between him and any regular fan beyond the type of work he did in the wrestling business: “Bro, I’m a regular guy just like you. The only difference between me and you is I had a different type of job. That’s it. That’s the only thing that separates that.”
Russo’s point was pretty blunt: he thinks fans give celebrities and wrestlers way too much power in their minds. To him, fame does not make someone better than anyone else, and wrestling fans should stop treating performers like untouchable figures.
