Dominik Mysterio’s “I’m only here so I don’t get fined” tweet may have been a joke to some fans, but Vince Russo doesn’t think WWE was laughing.
Speaking on The Coach & Bro Show, Russo argued that Dominik’s loss on the August 3 edition of RAW wasn’t just another booking decision. He believes WWE intentionally pinned the AAA Mega Champion as a response to the meme Dominik shared after SummerSlam.
Russo first reminded viewers about Dominik’s SummerSlam segment with Danhausen before bringing up the social media post that followed.
“We saw Dom do the angle with Danhausen at SummerSlam… Do you remember the little meme that Dom threw up on social media?”
Jonathan Coachman immediately knew which one he meant: “‘I’m only here so I don’t get fined.'” Russo said that wasn’t just a funny meme.
“‘I’m only here so I don’t get fined.’ Okay, guys… That was Dom’s way of saying, ‘I did what I was told. I didn’t agree with it.’ That was his way of saying that.”
Coachman agreed. The discussion then shifted to RAW, where Dominik teamed with JD McDonagh against Chad Gable and Penta. Russo said the finish made no sense if WWE was trying to protect one of its biggest stars: “Who would you assume is getting beat in that match?” Coachman didn’t hesitate: “Well, it’s clear JD.” Instead, Dominik took the pinfall.
“Dominik got pinned in that match, guys. You could be a three-year-old… you would have known JD McDonagh was the guy to beat.”
That’s when Russo connected the dots. Rather than embarrassing one of WWE’s biggest stars on television, Russo argued someone should have simply talked to Dominik backstage.
“They beat Dom with Danhausen, then he put out that tweet, then they beat him again… This is the pettiness. ‘No, Dom, you’re not going to do that… We’re going to give you a little slap on the knuckles.’ ‘Hey, Dom… if you had a problem with that on Sunday night, you should have spoke to somebody… Putting out that little meme maybe wasn’t the right thing to do.'”
Coachman took the criticism even further. He said he could picture people in WWE creative seeing the post and deciding to “teach him a lesson” instead of recognizing that Dominik may have had a point in the first place.
“‘I think we need to teach him a little lesson,’ instead of saying… maybe he was right.”
Russo also questioned why WWE would weaken one of its hottest acts, while Coachman pointed out just how far Dominik has fallen in a short period of time.
“Less than a year ago, he is pinning John Cena. And now he’s getting pinned by Danhausen and in a tag match.”
Coachman made it clear just how highly he thinks of Dominik, saying that if he were starting a wrestling promotion today, he’d build it around just two wrestlers.
“If I was starting a wrestling company, it would be with two dudes: Dirty Dom as my heel and Bron Breakker as my babyface.”
Whether Russo’s theory is accurate is impossible to know from the outside, but one thing is certain: Dominik Mysterio’s booking has become one of the most talked-about subjects in wrestling this week, and Russo is convinced there’s more to it than simply wins and losses.
