Velveteen Dream’s first boxing fight hasn’t even happened yet, and things have already gone completely off the rails. The former WWE star had to be dragged away by security after going after his opponent with what appeared to be a metal pole—and somehow that still wasn’t the end of it.
Velveteen Dream was at the Duel Arena 1 media event in Orlando on August 27 ahead of his cruiserweight boxing debut against Ryan Pownall on August 29. Things started with normal fight-week trash talk. Dream talked up his WWE background and made it clear that performing at the Kia Center wasn’t exactly intimidating him.
“I’m the real f****** deal. The Kia Center is not the Velveteen Dream’s first f****** day on the job. I’ve been at the Barclays Center, MSG, Staples Center—”
Pownall didn’t even let him finish: “And now he’s fighting at food courts at a mall.” Dream immediately fired back as he made it clear he was going to destroy Ryan.
“And now I’m going to kick your mother****** ass on August 29, b****.”
That’s when things started getting messy. Security had to hold Dream back as he tried to get toward Pownall. Dream was eventually taken away, which probably should have been the end of the whole thing, but it wasn’t.
Dream came back carrying what appeared to be a metal pole and tried to get at Pownall with it. Security jumped in before he could reach him and once again tried to get the situation under control, but Dream still kept going.
He lunged toward Pownall’s table as several security guards grabbed him and hauled him away. Dream continued screaming at his opponent while being removed from the area, but then he came back again. This time, Dream crashed the stage and started knocking over parts of the setup, leaving the media event in complete chaos before things finally settled down.
Dream and Pownall are supposed to save the actual fighting for August 29, when the former NXT star makes his cruiserweight boxing debut. After what happened at the press conference, though, getting both men into the ring might be the easy part.
