Greg Hamilton has heard people debate why WWE got rid of him for the last five years, and apparently he’s finally tired of hearing everyone else’s version. According to the former ring announcer, the real reason he got fired is a hell of a lot stranger than people thought.
Hamilton jumped into the comments of an Instagram post and decided to set the record straight. He claims WWE fired him because he appeared in a music video — except Hamilton says he had absolutely no idea he was even in it.
“Truth for all of you who have never worked for the FED…..I actually had no idea I was in a video…..I got a call from Talent Relations and was fired for it.”
Hamilton said the call came at a pretty unexpected time. He had just gotten home from WWE’s trip to Saudi Arabia and was watching Cincinnati Bearcats football when Talent Relations apparently dropped the news on him.
“I had just landed from Saudi Arabia and was watching Cincinnati Bearcats Football. For years I’ve dealt with your opinions….this is the truth. Got fired for being in a music video I never agreed to for NIL that WWE owned. Y’all done?”
That’s definitely different from how the story looked back in October 2021. Hamilton’s release came shortly after his weird online situation with rapper Westside Gunn, who had used Hamilton’s voice on a track without his permission.
Hamilton wasn’t happy about that and publicly threatened legal action, even suggesting WWE’s lawyers would back him up. Then WWE released him, so naturally a lot of people connected the dots and assumed the social media blowup had something to do with it.
Hamilton didn’t exactly kill that speculation afterwards either. When he initially addressed leaving WWE, he called it a “mutual respect departure” and said the nonstop schedule had become too much as he wanted to focus more on his family and mental health.
“First and foremost, don’t let the internet or social media gas you up; this was a mutual respect departure from a great company. Nothing but respect from both sides. It’s business. We all know our worth.”
Hamilton has become a lot more open about his WWE experience since then. Earlier this year, he even revealed that he once got called into Talent Relations just because he tagged a restaurant he liked on social media.
“I got called into talent relations for tagging a restaurant once and I paid for the meal. I was like, ‘Man, I love this place.’ I tagged the restaurant [on social media], walk in the arena and a referee’s like, ‘Talent relations wants to see you.’”
Five years later, Hamilton clearly isn’t calling his WWE exit “mutual” anymore. His version now is pretty damn straightforward: WWE fired him over a music video appearance he says he never agreed to and didn’t even know existed, and judging by that “Y’all done?” at the end, he seems more than ready to put the speculation to bed.
