Trick Williams didn’t get a quiet heads-up before stepping into one of the biggest moments of his NXT run with The Undertaker. Williams has now revealed that before he went out and threatened to knock The Deadman out, there was no backstage conversation between the two about what Trick was going to say or how Undertaker might respond.
During his conversation with SHAK Wrestling, Trick looked back at the NXT segment where he told Undertaker, “I’m glad you like to roll your eyes to the back of your head because I might just knock your ass out tomorrow.” According to Williams, that wasn’t something he had cleared with Undertaker beforehand. He simply went for it and waited to see what happened.
“That’s some of my most risky work because, true backstory on that, I did not talk to him before saying this. So, I just threw it out there just to see how he was going to respond.”
That gamble ended with Williams eating a chokeslam, but Trick says there was no bad blood afterward. In fact, he walked away believing he had earned Undertaker’s respect.
“When I saw him, of course, I took a chokeslam, but it was smiles after that. So, I think I earned his respect that night.”
Williams also remembered exactly what Undertaker said before dropping him. The moment hit Trick even harder because Undertaker was someone he had been legitimately terrified of growing up.
“He said, ‘Trick, I’m going to make you famous,’ and he gave me a chokeslam.”
Even hearing Undertaker’s entrance music was enough to shake him before the confrontation really got going. Trick explained that Undertaker had such an effect on him as a kid that he wouldn’t even select him while playing wrestling video games.
“I remember hearing that gong when his music drops, and my heart dropped all the way to my calf. I was like, ‘Oh shoot, this is really happening.’”
“This is your whole childhood. True story, playing a video game as a little kid, he was the one character I would never select because I was terrified of The Undertaker. So, to be there in the ring with him 20 years later, or whatever the case is, 25, that’s insane.”
The biggest detail from Trick’s story is that the confrontation wasn’t preceded by some backstage agreement between the two about how he would address Undertaker. Williams took the risk in the moment, threw the line out there and found out the hard way exactly how The Deadman was going to answer.
