Trick Williams didn’t grow up planning to become a WWE Superstar, but one unexpected email completely changed the direction of his life.
During an appearance on Nightcap, Trick Williams opened up about his path from football to WWE, explaining that wrestling wasn’t even on his radar while chasing an NFL career. He described how his football journey started at Hampton University before transferring to the University of South Carolina, where he worked his way into a starting role.
Things took a turn after college when his football momentum stalled, even after getting an opportunity with the Philadelphia Eagles. While recalling how wrestling entered the picture, Trick explained that everything started when he attempted to continue his football career through another route.
“So, I played at Hampton University… I transferred to the University of South Carolina… worked my way up to becoming a starter… I still found my way in camp with the Philadelphia Eagles… I got cut from camp… they said we're going to get you with the XFL… so when I sent my information to the XFL, I get an email from WWE the next day. They said, ‘Are you interested in coming in for a tryout?’ And I'm thinking to myself… I ain't never thought about wrestling.”
He admitted that the idea initially felt strange, especially after spending years focused entirely on football. That hesitation didn’t last long once his father stepped in with some direct advice that stuck with him.
“Then my pops said, ‘Man, you better go out there and make some money. Put them tights on and get out there and make a name.’ I've been wrestling ever since.”
That moment ended up becoming the turning point that led Trick Williams to WWE, where he has since become one of the most recognizable rising stars on the roster.
Trick Williams’ story shows how quickly life can change with one opportunity, especially when athletes stay open to unexpected paths. What started as a football dream ultimately turned into a career inside WWE, and he hasn’t looked back since.
