Tony Schiavone doesn’t understand wrestling fans who spend their time hoping AEW goes out of business. As far as he’s concerned, wanting one of wrestling’s major companies to disappear is completely missing the point.
While speaking on the What Happened When podcast, Schiavone went after WWE fans who actively root for AEW to fail, arguing that competition between the companies is ultimately better for wrestling.
“Say what you want, and I don’t know all you WWE fanboys out there that want to see AEW disintegrate. Why you would want to see a company do that, I don’t know. What you don’t realize and what you don’t get is how good competition is for the product.”
Schiavone wasn’t pretending that his own loyalties are unclear. He works for AEW, but that doesn’t mean he wants WWE to disappear. In fact, he feels exactly the opposite. He added that people who want AEW to die are idiots and they don’t understand why AEW existing is good for wrestling.
“The people on Twitter who want the demise of AEW. I don’t want the demise of WWE, and I’m employed by AEW. It’s good for the product. You don’t get that because you’re a f****** idiot, but it’s good for the f****** product. So, there I said it and I’ll say it again.”
Tony Schiavone’s argument is that wrestling is currently enjoying a particularly strong period, and having multiple major promotions producing successful shows only helps keep that going.
“I really believe that we’re in a very hot time right now. And the key to having a good promotion is when times are not as hot to keep things interesting, keep things going because they’re gonna get hot again. Just good stuff.”
