Rey Fénix now has championship business waiting for him in Mexico City, and WWE didn’t waste much time making it official.
After the September 4 episode of SmackDown went off the air, WWE uploaded backstage footage featuring Fénix, Ricky Saints and Fraxiom. During the segment, it was revealed that Fénix will defend the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship against Saints on next week’s SmackDown from Arena CDMX. The announcement immediately added another title match to an already loaded Mexico City card. That means Fénix will now put AAA gold on the line in front of a hometown Mexico City crowd while WWE continues mixing AAA talent and championships into SmackDown.
The September 11 show is already stacked. CM Punk is defending the WWE Championship against Sami Zayn, Chelsea Green is putting the WWE Women’s Championship on the line against Nia Jax, Paige is facing Nikki Bella, and the War Raiders are defending the AAA Tag Team Championship against Damian Priest and R-Truth. Now Fénix vs. Saints joins the party.
WWE was already treating its Mexico City return like a major event, and throwing another championship match onto the card only cranks things up even more. Fénix defending AAA gold against Ricky Saints gives the show another fresh matchup with real stakes attached.
Updated WWE SmackDown lineup for Mexico City now includes:
- WWE Championship: CM Punk (c) vs. Sami Zayn
- WWE Women’s Championship: Chelsea Green (c) vs. Nia Jax
- AAA World Cruiserweight Championship: Rey Fénix (c) vs. Ricky Saints
- AAA Tag Team Championship: War Raiders (c) vs. Damian Priest & R-Truth
