Thunder Rosa has experienced plenty of big moments throughout her wrestling career, but her recent appearance at the CMLL Women’s Grand Prix in Mexico hit her differently. The AEW star admitted that she actually broke down in tears while representing her home country, and it all happened before the competition even got underway.
The October 23 CMLL Women’s Grand Prix featured talent from multiple promotions, with Thunder Rosa competing as part of Team CMLL. The tournament ultimately saw Skadi secure the victory for her team after pinning Megan Bayne, but for Rosa, the experience meant much more than the result.
During an interview with Paltrocast, Rosa opened up about what it meant to participate in the Grand Prix for the first time. She revealed that hearing the Mexican national anthem was enough to bring her to tears, especially knowing she was representing her country on such a major stage.
“Yes, it was. It was very emotional for me, to hear the national anthem. I was actually crying. I said, they actually took a couple of pictures and put me in there. I was really moved because, it was my first time doing the Grand Prix, it just feels so nice to represent my country, and it was weird because I was representing CMLL.”
Rosa also explained that representing CMLL initially felt a little unusual, but she quickly reminded herself that she had every reason to be standing alongside the promotion’s wrestlers because of her own championship status.
“But at the same time, I have to remember that I am a champion in CMLL, so it only makes sense. So, yeah, it was very special for me.”
For Rosa, the Grand Prix wasn’t simply another opportunity to compete in Mexico. Getting to represent her country while participating in the event for the first time gave the occasion a personal significance that she clearly wasn’t expecting to hit quite so hard.
And while Skadi walked away with the decisive victory for Team CMLL, Rosa left with a memory that had nothing to do with wins or losses. Hearing her country’s anthem and realizing what the moment represented was enough to make this one of the more emotional experiences of her wrestling career.
