Thekla can talk trash with the best of them, but sitting behind an AEW commentary desk was apparently a whole different nightmare.
During an interview with TMZ’s Inside the Ring, Thekla admitted she still has no idea how AEW let her do commentary in the first place — and said the experience got awkward fast when she felt like the announcers weren’t giving her much to work with. The subject came up while Thekla was talking about AEW’s commentary team. She first gave Tony Schiavone some love after seeing a much dirtier side of him during his stand-up comedy.
“I like Tony because he’s vile. I saw his stand-up comedy a couple of months ago and I was utterly surprised at all the crazy shit he was spitting.”
Thekla then remembered the time AEW actually put a headset on her and let her join the broadcast. Apparently, she walked away wondering how the hell she got the assignment in the first place.
“And I like Tony. I like, you know, when I did commentary that one time, I have no idea how they let me actually do commentary, but that was really funny because they none of them gave me anything to work with.”
And Thekla wasn’t pretending she cruised through it. She straight-up admitted that sitting at the desk left her feeling uncomfortable.
“Good lord. Like, like they were all very—I—it was very awkward and I felt very—I felt very awkward.”
For somebody who usually looks completely at home creating chaos on AEW television, that’s a pretty funny admission. This is the same Thekla who previously caused enough trouble on Dynamite that AEW’s commentary team had to apologize after she spat on and flipped off a STARDOM graphic. Getting the announcers scrambling is apparently easier for her than actually becoming one of them. Still, Thekla wasn’t trashing the commentary team or acting like the job was easy. Quite the opposite. After getting a taste of it herself, she admitted there’s a lot more going on behind that desk than simply describing wrestling moves.
“But being a commentator is a very hard job because you have to obviously, you know, react to what’s going on right in front of you, but you also have to be, you know, you have to say some funny shit and be a character.”
So don’t expect Thekla to start begging Tony Khan for a permanent headset anytime soon. She can insult half the roster, pick fights and cause complete hell on live television without blinking, but apparently being stuck behind a desk trying to keep the conversation flowing was enough to make even the Toxic Spider uncomfortable.
