Sting may be retired from the ring, but he’s still very much involved in AEW — just in a different way.
Sting gave insight into what he’s actually doing behind the scenes in All Elite Wrestling, and it goes beyond just appearances. Speaking during an interview with Hunter, Jessica, and Cush, Sting was asked directly whether he’s taken on a mentorship role similar to Shawn Michaels. His answer made it clear that while it’s not a full-time position, he is actively helping talent when he’s around.
“You know, when I’m there, when I’m with the guys, yes, of course I will give feedback on a match that I saw or a gimmick or, you know, a certain move or whatever psychology that somebody’s trying to use or somebody’s trying to develop in their character.”
Sting explained that his involvement is more situational than structured, but when he’s present, he makes sure to contribute.
“I definitely am there to always lend some sort of advice, you know, and they’re all so gracious. You know, they’re so happy to hear from me.”
He also revealed that his role isn’t limited to just backstage visits — he stays in touch with certain talent even when he’s not physically there.
“But, you know, I’m not there a whole lot. But when I am there, I am involved, and some of the guys I’m in contact with, and I’ll talk with them on the phone. And so I do have some contact with them.”
That lines up with how Sting has been used since retiring — making occasional appearances, including his recent spot on AEW Dynamite, where he gave Darby Allin a pep talk ahead of a major match.
At the end of the day, Sting isn’t stepping away completely — he’s just shifted into a low-key mentorship role, offering guidance when needed while staying connected to AEW talent behind the scenes.
Do you think Sting should have a more regular on-screen or backstage role in AEW, or is this limited involvement the right move? Let us know your thoughts.
