Stephanie McMahon found a pretty fitting way to celebrate Grayson Waller successfully defending the NXT Championship at Halloween Havoc. Instead of simply sending him the usual congratulations, she decided it was finally time to unleash footage of herself taking part in one of Waller’s favorite Australian traditions.
Following Waller’s successful title defense against Tony D’Angelo, McMahon took to Twitter posted a video from Waller’s appearance on her podcast. The clip showed McMahon joining the NXT Champion for a shoey, drinking out of Waller’s boot. McMahon congratulated Waller on retaining his title before admitting she could only imagine what her drink must have tasted like coming out of his footwear.
“Congratulations on retaining the #NXTChampionship @GraysonWWE! Seems an appropriate time to post the #shoey! Can’t imagine how that tasted out of your boot!”
Of course, drinking alcohol out of a wrestling boot isn’t some random torture Waller cooked up specifically for Stephanie. The Australian star has been doing shoeys for years and has made the celebration part of his wrestling persona. Waller previously told Chris Van Vliet that he was inspired by UFC fighter Tai Tuivasa and Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo doing shoeys on major stages. To him, there’s something uniquely Australian about celebrating a huge moment by doing something completely ridiculous.
“In my eyes, a shoey is just the perfect example of an Australian being a fun, light-hearted kind of guy. It’s a celebration. The first time I saw it was Tai Tuivasa in the UFC. He’d get up on the cage and do the shoey, and it’s just so ridiculous and silly, but I think that’s part of the Australian fun.”
Now Waller can add Stephanie McMahon to the list of people he’s managed to drag into the tradition. And after his Halloween Havoc title defense, she apparently couldn’t resist finally showing everyone exactly what happened when she agreed to drink from the NXT Champion’s boot.
