Rey Fenix may not have to wait long for his first AAA World Cruiserweight Championship defense.
In an update, TRNBCKL has learned that Rey Fenix vs. Axiom, which is scheduled for tonight’s episode of SmackDown, is currently slated to be contested for the AAA Cruiserweight Championship.
“Rey Fenix vs. Axiom is set to take place on tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown. TRNBCKL has learned that this match is currently slated to be for the AAA Cruiserweight Championship.”
This comes after Fenix captured the title from Laredo Kid at AAA Noche de los Grandes. After weeks of dealing with Laredo Kid’s underhanded tactics, Fenix finally got his revenge and left the event with championship gold around his waist.
Fenix’s title win was hard-fought. He survived submissions targeting his back and leg, overcame multiple attempts at cheating, including a low blow and the use of an exposed turnbuckle, and eventually put Laredo Kid away with a second Mexican Muscle Buster to win the championship.
Now, it appears his first defense could take place on WWE television. Tonight’s SmackDown is already set to feature Gunther revealing his condition for granting Cody Rhodes a rematch, King and Queen of the Ring tournament action, and a non-title women’s tag team match featuring Paige and Brie Bella against Fatal Influence. The addition of Rey Fenix vs. Axiom for the AAA Cruiserweight Championship would only make the show even stronger.
As of now, WWE has not officially announced that the title will be on the line, but the current expectation is that Fenix will put his newly won championship up for grabs against Axiom on SmackDown.
Rey Fenix just won the AAA Cruiserweight Championship, and now he may be bringing that title straight to WWE television. If the championship is officially on the line, fans could be getting one of the most exciting title matches SmackDown has featured in weeks.
