Penta may be heading straight for Roman Reigns. The luchadores tournament still has plenty of wrestling left, but behind the scenes, there’s already a feeling that Penta is the man WWE will send into Mexico City to challenge the World Heavyweight Champion.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, after speaking with a talent, the feeling backstage is that Penta will win the ongoing tournament and earn the World Heavyweight Championship match against Reigns on the September 14 edition of RAW in Mexico City.
That would be a massive spot for Penta, and he’s already one win closer to getting there. Penta defeated Laredo Kid during the August 10 edition of RAW to advance from the opening round. WWE hasn’t officially declared him the tournament favorite, but the latest word from backstage certainly makes his remaining matches considerably more interesting.
The tournament was only recently announced as a WWE and AAA crossover to find Roman’s next challenger. Psycho Clown and La Parka still have to fight on the August 15 edition of AAA, while Dragon Lee will face Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. and Rey Fénix will take on El Fiscal on the August 17 RAW.
But apparently, Penta is the one to watch. That also clears up some of the mystery surrounding Roman’s Mexico City opponent. El Grande Americano had previously been rumored for the championship match, only for WWE to shut that down and announce the tournament instead.
Now we may have a much better idea of where it’s all going. Nothing is official until Penta actually survives the bracket, but he’s already through the first round and the backstage feeling reportedly has him going all the way. If that happens, Penta vs. Roman Reigns is waiting at the finish line in Mexico City.
