Shawn Michaels may still be one of WWE’s most respected backstage figures, but when it came time to negotiate his latest deal with the company, he revealed he stayed far away from the business side of things — and let his wife Rebecca handle it instead.

While appearing on What’s Your Story? with Stephanie McMahon, Michaels opened up about the role Rebecca has played throughout his WWE career and family life, explaining that she has quietly handled far more behind the scenes than most people realize. Michaels praised Rebecca for putting her own life on pause to support their family while also managing business matters connected to his career.

“I know that sounds cliché to say, but you know, she really has—she, you know, put everything, every ounce of her life on hold and poured into those children every day and continues to do to this day. She supported me along the whole way, you know, and taking care of everything from a business standpoint behind the scenes, and continues to do it now.”

That led Michaels to reveal that Rebecca was actually the person who negotiated his current WWE contract.

“I mean, you know, she’s the one that negotiated my last contract, you know what I mean?”

Stephanie McMahon immediately jumped in joking that Rebecca probably told Shawn exactly what to say during negotiations.

“Just told you what to say. She just told you what to say. Or she was the one on the phone? Oh wow, wow.”

Michaels confirmed she was directly handling the talks herself: “Oh yeah, yep.” As the conversation continued, Michaels admitted he struggles separating business from his emotional connection to WWE because of how much loyalty he still feels toward the company after spending decades there.

“She’s just—and again, because I can’t—I’m a pushover, and when it comes, you know, to this place… You know, I have a love, a passion, and a loyalty to this place.”

Stephanie then pointed out that Rebecca’s loyalty is focused first on protecting him rather than protecting the company.

“But her loyalty and passion is to you—her husband.”

That comment led Michaels to explain why he trusts her to take over those conversations completely.

“Nothing comes before us, and that’s the line that I have trouble drawing, and she doesn’t, so I let her handle it.”

Bottom line — Shawn Michaels openly admitted that his passion and loyalty to WWE can make him too soft during negotiations, which is why his wife Rebecca stepped in and handled his current contract talks herself.
