Seth Rollins isn’t treating his SummerSlam match with Roman Reigns like just another title fight.
This is The Shield history coming back around. Roman is walking in as World Heavyweight Champion, Seth is standing across from the one man he has haunted for years, and WWE is finally going back to a singles rivalry that somehow hasn’t happened much on premium live events.
While speaking with Brad Williams, Rollins said this SummerSlam match feels different because he and Roman have only had a few singles pay-per-view matches despite being linked for 14 years: “It’s different, right?” Williams agreed that the match feels like it has been building for years.“Yeah. It feels like the buildup has been appropriate.”
Rollins then broke down why this match stands out: “One-on-one, Roman and I have only had—I want to say this will be our third singles pay-per-view match ever.” Rollins also made sure to point out one very important detail: Roman still hasn’t beaten him in those singles PLE matches.
“We had one in 2022 at the Royal Rumble, which I won. Uh, and then we had one in 2016 at Money in the Bank, which I also won.”
That history is why Seth is walking into SummerSlam with a very real psychological edge. Roman has dominated WWE for years, but Seth is the one opponent he has never fully shaken off. Rollins said it is strange that two stars featured as heavily as they have been barely crossed paths in singles PLE matches.
“But for two guys who’ve been as prominently featured as we are in WWE for the last 14 years, to only have three is pretty, pretty wild, I would say.”
That is what makes the SummerSlam match so interesting. Roman accepted the challenge on RAW after Seth reminded him of their Shield history, their past matches, and the fact that he has always been a ghost Roman could not escape.
Roman said he does not just want to beat Seth. He needs to beat him, and he wants his family there to see it happen. Now SummerSlam gives Roman the chance to finally fix that problem. Seth already owns two major singles wins over him, and if he beats Roman again, that ghost becomes even harder to escape.
