Sami Zayn took the Undisputed WWE Championship back from CM Punk on SmackDown, and four days later, he borrowed one of Punk’s most famous celebrations too.
On September 15, Sami Zayn took to Instagram and recreated Punk’s iconic WWE Championship fridge photo with the title he regained on the September 11 episode of SmackDown. He didn’t need to say a word because the photo made the statement.
The callback has some extra bite because Punk pulled the exact same move after beating Zayn for the championship earlier this year. Punk defeated Zayn on the July 6 episode of RAW in Chicago and then recreated the famous refrigerator photo from his 2011 WWE Championship run.
That original image came after Punk defeated John Cena at Money in the Bank 2011 and famously left the arena with the WWE Championship. Fifteen years later, he brought the photo back after another title win in Chicago. This time, Zayn got the last laugh.
Zayn regained the championship from Punk in a chaotic SmackDown main event involving Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae and Kevin Owens. Owens accidentally struck Punk with the title, allowing Zayn to eventually connect with the Helluva Kick and become a two-time WWE Champion. Now Zayn has taken Punk’s championship and his fridge celebration. Whether Punk finds the imitation funny is another question entirely.
