RVD had a wild Hollywood wrestling crossover moment with David Arquette, and the story is exactly as strange as it sounds.
During his One of a Kind podcast, RVD was talking about celebrities recognizing him when he remembered going to DDP’s screening of the Jake “The Snake” Roberts movie in Hollywood. When he arrived at the theater, fans were outside taking pictures and waiting around. That’s when one guy came up to him with a championship belt. That guy turned out to be David Arquette. RVD said Arquette walked up to him acting shy and nervous, even though Arquette was already a Hollywood name and, yes, a former WCW Champion.
“When I went to DDP’s screening of the Jake the Snake movie in Hollywood, when I got there and I’m walking into the theater and the fans are outside getting pictures or whatever, one dude comes up to me and he’s got a belt and he’s acting all shy.”
RVD said Arquette asked him for an autograph like a regular fan. Then RVD realized who was standing in front of him.
“He’s like, ‘Rob Van Dam, would you sign this? Would you sign this?’ And I’m like, ‘Of course I will.’ I’m signing. I’m like, ‘You’re David Arquette, right?’”
That’s when RVD said Arquette started acting embarrassed, which made the whole thing even funnier to him.
“He was just acting like he was all blushing and stuff and I’m like, ‘Dude, come on. You’re David Arquette. What are you doing? You’re WCW Champion David Arquette.’”
RVD said he has seen Arquette several times since then and talked to him, but that was their first meeting. What stuck with him was how shy Arquette seemed during the interaction. RVD said Arquette didn’t come up like a celebrity introducing himself. He came up like a kid asking one of his wrestling heroes for a signature.
“I’ve seen him several times since then and talked to him and stuff, but that was first time I met him.”
“He was shy in a weird way. He didn’t even say like, ‘Hey Rob, I’m Dave, man. Can I get your signature of this?’ He was just like, ‘Can you sign this?’ Like I turned him eight years old or something.”
David Arquette’s WCW title run will always be one of wrestling’s most infamous celebrity moments, but RVD’s story paints him as someone who still had real fan energy when he was around wrestlers he respected. For all the jokes people have made about Arquette’s WCW run, that autograph story shows he was not just playing wrestler for a paycheck.
