Rob Van Dam did not hold back while discussing the collapse of his first marriage, revealing that his ex-wife was allegedly sleeping with the maintenance guy before their relationship finally ended.
The former WWE Champion opened up after a fan told him that he had separated from a toxic wife who gaslit him. RVD told the fan that leaving a miserable relationship can eventually become one of the best things that ever happened to him, even when the breakup initially feels like a failure. RVD admitted that he fought hard to save his own marriage because he did not want to accept that it had failed.
“I fought hard to try to keep my marriage going because I looked at it as being a failure, which maybe you did too as far as splitting goes. So, I really had no choice. There was no way that I could make that shit stay.”
That is when RVD dropped the biggest revelation from the conversation. Looking back now, he said he is thankful that his marriage ended and claimed his ex-wife had been having sex with a maintenance worker.
“In hindsight, having so much time now and seeing the bigger picture—because you’re never able to see the whole picture, you can only see up until now, and as time goes on, you’re always able to see a bigger picture—I’m so thankful.”
“I don’t even care that she was f*cking the maintenance guy. I’m glad. I want to thank him for f*cking taking that toxic, hateful shit away from me.”
Van Dam married Sonya Delbeck in 1998. The two separated in December 2015 after roughly 17 years of marriage. Sonya filed for divorce in Los Angeles in May 2016, citing irreconcilable differences, and the divorce was finalized in May 2018.
RVD estimated on the show that he had been married for around 12 years, but admitted it may have been longer. The public timeline shows they were legally married for close to two decades by the time the divorce became final.
“I don’t ever need to see her again. And I was married for 12 years, something like that, maybe even longer.”
RVD made it clear that he does not believe they ever belonged together. He described himself and his ex-wife as two completely different people who could not find happiness in the same way.
“We certainly should not have been with each other. We’re two way different people who find happiness in completely different ways, and our relationship sucked.”
“Maybe she’s with someone who’s right for her. Although I’m pretty sure it is like that with whoever she’s going to be with, because I can’t imagine her not being miserable. But at the same time, I don’t give a fuck. I really don’t.”
RVD said his life has been filled with love and positive experiences since escaping the marriage. He told the fan not to rush into another relationship and promised that the pain of separating could eventually be replaced by relief.
“Right now, life has been so rewarding. It’s an abundance of love and good things happening, which was never achievable being with the wrong person. It wasn’t.”
“Someday, you’ll be able to be thankful. The truth is, it sounds like you really did yourself a favor, and it’s never too late because all any of us have is from this point on for the rest of our lives. So, congratulations.”
RVD clearly has no interest in protecting the memory of his first marriage. Years after the divorce became final, he is thanking the maintenance guy, calling the relationship toxic and saying the happiness he has now was never possible with his ex-wife.
