WWE’s wild El Grande Americano storyline just took a major turn — and it looks like WrestleMania 42 is no longer part of the plan.
After weeks of buildup pointing toward a match between the Original El Grande Americano and his masked rival at WrestleMania 42, a new update has completely changed the direction of the feud.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live on March 31, 2026, Bryan Alvarez revealed that the match is no longer scheduled for WrestleMania — and is instead being moved elsewhere. Alvarez addressed the situation directly, confirming that WWE is stepping away from doing the match on its biggest stage. He explained that the match is now being reserved for AAA.
“What happened to El Grande Americano vs. Original El Grande Americano at WrestleMania 42? Well, apparently the El Grande vs. El Grande match is going to happen for AAA. They’ve got a date booked for that match, so they’re not doing a mask vs. mask match between those two guys at WrestleMania — they’re saving that for AAA.”
This marks a major change, especially considering how strongly WWE had been building the rivalry following Chad Gable’s return as the Original El Grande Americano and his ongoing issues with the current masked version tied to Ludwig Kaiser.
Up until now, the expectation was that the feud — centered around identity, legacy, and unmasking — would culminate at WrestleMania. But this update suggests WWE is holding back the biggest possible version of the match, potentially for a cross-promotional setting with Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.
With AAA already weaving the El Grande Americano storyline into its own programming — including recent chaos involving Dominik Mysterio — the decision shows a much bigger picture for the angle beyond WWE alone.
Instead of delivering the payoff at WrestleMania, WWE now appears to be stretching the storyline into a larger crossover moment at AAA, saving the mask vs. mask stakes for a stage that could carry even more long-term impact.
Do you think WWE made the right call by moving this match to AAA, or should El Grande Americano vs. El Grande Americano have stayed on the WrestleMania 42 card? Let us know your thoughts.
