Roman Reigns might be about to get a little lucha libre makeover — because WWE just dropped an official Roman Reigns lucha mask hours before The OTC puts his World Heavyweight Championship on the line against Penta in Mexico City.
The black-and-gold mask popped up on WWE Shop ahead of the September 14 episode of Monday Night RAW, and the timing sure as hell isn’t subtle. WWE describes the replica as taking Reigns’ Tribal Chief look and running it through the “historic lens of lucha libre.” The mask is officially licensed, priced at $49.99 and currently available to reserve.
Now the big question: Is this just WWE cashing in on its Mexico City trip, or are we actually about to see Roman Reigns walk into Arena CDMX wearing the thing? Reigns is already walking into a very different kind of title defense. RAW is back in Mexico City for the first time in 15 years, and Penta earned his shot by surviving an eight-man tournament created by AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio specifically to determine Roman’s challenger.
Penta went through Laredo Kid, La Parka and finally Rey Fenix to earn the biggest opportunity of his WWE run. Ringside News previously covered Penta emerging from the tournament as Roman Reigns’ next World Heavyweight Championship challenger. And WWE appears to be leaning all the way into the lucha libre atmosphere before they even lock up.
The new Roman mask features a black base with gold tribal-style detailing running across the face and a red accent above the forehead. It still looks unmistakably Roman Reigns — just if The Tribal Chief suddenly decided he wanted to start diving through the ropes.
There is nothing confirming Reigns will actually wear the mask on RAW, so this could simply be some perfectly timed merchandise. But dropping a Roman Reigns lucha mask on the same day he’s defending his championship against Penta in Mexico City is certainly one hell of a coincidence.
