The Rock is adding another major Hollywood project to his growing list, and this time he’s heading straight into Greek mythology. Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions is developing a live-action Medusa movie for Disney, bringing one of mythology’s most recognizable monsters to the big screen.

According to Deadline, screenwriter Michael Montemayor has been tapped to write the first draft of the original live-action film, which is being developed under Seven Bucks Productions’ deal with Disney. The project is still in its early stages, but the plan is to deliver a unique interpretation of the legendary snake-haired figure.

Medusa is best known in Greek mythology as one of the three Gorgon sisters, alongside Euryale and Stheno. Her terrifying ability to turn anyone who looked directly at her into stone made her one of mythology’s most dangerous creatures. She was eventually killed by the hero Perseus, who used her severed head as a weapon before giving it to Athena.

While The Rock is heavily involved behind the scenes, there’s an important catch. Johnson is not currently attached to star in the movie. Instead, he’s producing alongside his Seven Bucks partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, with Melissa Fried overseeing the project for the company. Matt Smith is also producing through Electro Corduroy Entertainment.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Johnson will never appear in the film, but there’s currently no indication that he’ll step in front of the camera. For now, his involvement is strictly as a producer.

Montemayor has already established a relationship with Disney, having worked on the studio’s upcoming live-action Tangled movie, which is scheduled for release on March 31, 2028. He’s also developing Stepsisters, a live-action Cinderella spinoff, and previously sold the romantic comedy Court Date to Netflix.

The Medusa project adds to an increasingly busy Hollywood schedule for Johnson and Seven Bucks Productions. The company is also preparing for Jumanji: Open World, which stars Johnson and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Christmas Day. The previous two Jumanji movies featuring The Rock earned a combined $1.76 billion worldwide.

Johnson’s production company is also working with filmmaker Benny Safdie on Lizard Music for Amazon MGM Studios. The two previously collaborated on The Smashing Machine, while Seven Bucks also has an existing relationship with Disney through Jungle Cruise.

For The Rock, the Medusa movie represents another opportunity to expand his Hollywood business beyond the projects he personally headlines. While WWE audiences continue to keep an eye on his wrestling future, Johnson’s production company clearly has no shortage of major film projects in development.

It’s still unclear when Disney plans to release Medusa or who will play the title character, but having The Rock’s production company involved gives the project a recognizable name behind the scenes. Whether Johnson eventually decides to take on an acting role remains to be seen.

Would you like to see The Rock appear in Disney’s live-action Medusa movie, or should he stick to producing this one? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
