Rick Martel says WWE already came calling about the Hall of Fame, but he was not ready to say yes. “The Model” has heard fans make the case for his induction for years, and now he is revealing that the offer was apparently already on the table once.
Martel addressed the subject during an interview with Sean Mooney on Prime Time with Sean Mooney. When Mooney brought up how many fans believe he belongs in the WWE Hall of Fame, Martel said he got the call in the past, but passed on it at the time.
“I did a while back, you know. I got a call, but I wasn’t ready.”
Martel did not completely shut the door on the idea, but he made it clear that he is enjoying life right now and would have to look at the full situation before making that decision.
“I’m not sure if I would go, or right now I’m enjoying myself. I’m enjoying with all of this, and we’ll see.”
Mooney then compared it to real estate, saying someone has to see how the deal looks before making a move. Martel agreed with the idea, keeping things open-ended instead of giving a hard no.
Martel has a strong case for the Hall of Fame. He is a former AWA World Heavyweight Champion, a multiple-time WWF Tag Team Champion, and became one of WWE’s most memorable heels in the late 1980s and early 1990s with his arrogant “Model” character.
He has also been away from the wrestling spotlight for decades, which makes his recent return to convention appearances stand out even more. Martel said he started doing appearances again after a fan came to his Florida home for an autograph, kept coming back, and eventually invited him to an event.
Martel said he is enjoying reconnecting with fans and people he has not seen in years. That does not mean he is looking to jump fully back into wrestling, though, because he made it clear the road is no longer realistic for him.
The WWE Hall of Fame may still happen someday, but according to Rick Martel, he already had one chance and turned it down. For now, he seems happy doing things on his own terms.
