Ric Flair says some of his famous robes are being sold by people who don’t actually own them—and now he’s threatening legal action to get to the bottom of it. The Nature Boy even singled out one person he accused of stealing five robes as he warned anyone without proof of ownership that his attorney is coming.
Flair raised the issue on Twitter after spending the weekend in Philadelphia for his appearance with Dynasty Sports. He thanked the organizers before quickly turning his attention to what he believes is happening with pieces of his wrestling memorabilia.
Flair claimed people are attempting to sell his robes without having receipts or other proof that they legitimately acquired them from him. He also specifically accused Tiffany VanDemark of stealing five robes, though that allegation is Flair’s and has not been independently established.
“It Was A Phenomenal Weekend In Philadelphia, And Thank You Very Much To @DynastySportsPA And Steve Solomon. Unfortunately, It Has Come To My Attention That My Robes Are Being Sold By People Who Don’t Own Them Or Have A Receipt From Me. If They Do, They Are More Than Welcome To. If They Don’t, Just Like Tiffany VanDemark, Who Stole Five Of Them, As Of Tomorrow, My Attorney Will Seek Legal Documentation And If You Don’t Have It, You Will Be Expecting A Letter From My Attorney In Boston.”
The 16-time World Champion made it clear that these aren’t just old pieces of wrestling gear he’s willing to forget about. As Flair has gotten older, he says preserving memorabilia from his career has become increasingly important to him.
“I Can’t Imagine Why Anybody Would Steal Anything That I Worked So Hard For. Not Cool And I’m Coming For You. Hate To Be The Bearer Of Bad News, But As I Get Older, I Understand The Importance Of Having Some Of My Memorabilia.”
Apparently, the responses to Flair’s warning only got him more fired up. Flair returned with another post after reading the comments and introduced a new version of one of his favorite boasts. Instead of his shoes being worth more than someone’s house, Flair says that distinction now belongs to his robes.
“After Reading Your Comments, I Am Very Humored. So I Have A New Saying, My Robes Are Worth More Than Your House! Rather Than My Shoes, It’s Now My Robes. And FYI- It’s A Felony And That Shouldn’t Be Taken Lightly.”
Flair then took the post in a very Nature Boy direction. While dealing with problems getting home to Tampa, he said he was heading to the bar and invited anyone possessing one of his robes to bring it along—with Flair even offering to buy the drinks.
“And Also, I Am A Long Ways Away From OJ. I Haven’t Even Started Drinking Yet, So Get Ready For The Next Couple Hours. I’ve Been Fighting With American Airlines Just Trying To Get Back To Tampa. On The Way To The Bar As I Post This! You Know Where To Find Me, Come Join Me, And If You Have One Of My Robes Bring It With You! I Will Buy All Of Your Drinks. WOOOOO!”
Flair included several photos of his elaborate robes while making his point. The robe controversy comes just days after Flair revealed that blood clots in his legs prevented him from making the lengthy trip to Las Vegas for the Cauliflower Alley Club event honoring Bret Hart. Flair still traveled to Philadelphia shortly afterwards and followed through with his Dynasty Sports appearance.
Now that the Philadelphia trip is finished, Flair has a completely different fight on his hands. His robes represent some of the most recognizable pieces of memorabilia from his legendary career, and he’s making it clear that anyone trying to sell one better be able to prove exactly how they got it.
